Great article on ProRec by Chris Scheidies which looks at audio tools for Linux. To summarise the conclusion/s, Linux is as suitable as Mac OSX for audio applications with audio drivers built centrally into the OS but, it can be temperamental. Loading software can be tricky and fault finding not so straight forward. Many users find the high level of control over the system and, let's be honest, the inexpensiveness of the platform very attractive. There's a large selection of software now available with feature lists that are comparable with industry standards like Logic, Sonar and Digital Performer. Definitely worth a deeper look.
Based on Debian Linux 4.0, 64 Studio is a multimedia distribution (32 and 64 bit) which includes packages for a variety of audio, music, video, 2D & 3D graphics and publishing for the web/print applications. As is necessary, the kernel is enhanced for minimal latency and real-time operation. This is definitely worth a closer look!
While it's true that not so long ago installing and using GNU/Linux was a serious headache for all but experts, recent advances in user-friendliness have shown this to be no longer the case.
